Mexico City to Basilicata: Matera and Maratea
Mexico City → Matera → Maratea
Cave dwellings & a Tyrrhenian coast Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct
Basilicata, in Italy's instep, is one of the country's least visited regions, with a cave town on one side and a dramatic coast on the other. This route spends three nights in Matera and three in Maratea. From Mexico City you'll connect via Rome or another hub to Bari, then drive. In Matera, walk the Sassi, districts of houses and churches cut into the soft rock of a ravine. UNESCO lists them, together with the park of rock-hewn churches, as an outstanding example of a troglodyte settlement.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Matera: day one, drive from Bari; day two, the Sassi and cave churches; day three, belvedere across the ravine. Then spend days four to six in Maratea: day four, drive to the Tyrrhenian coast; day five, Redeemer statue and the old village; day six, coves by boat.
From the belvedere on the far side of the ravine, the whole town is seen stacked up the cliff. Maratea, on Basilicata's short Tyrrhenian coast, is a village of churches above a coast of cliffs and coves. Drive up Monte San Biagio to the large statue of Christ the Redeemer above it.
Practical notes: you'll need a hire car from Bari, and boat trips along the coast reach small beaches and grottoes. Spring and early autumn are the best seasons. The town has been used as a film location many times, including for The Passion of the Christ and the James Bond film No Time to Die.
The Christ the Redeemer statue above Maratea is more than 20 metres tall and was completed in the 1960s. Pane di Matera, a large bread made from durum wheat, is a local speciality. Maratea's coast is the only part of Basilicata on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Safety: Canada's advice for Italy is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 29 Sep 2026), and the US rates Italy Level 2 (10 Sep 2026).
