Red cliffs, lighthouses & Anne of Green Gables Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep

Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest province, is a gentle place of red soil, farms, beaches and lighthouses. This route spends three nights in Charlottetown and three in Cavendish. From Mexico City you'll connect through Toronto or Montréal.

Charlottetown hosted the 1864 conference that led to Canadian Confederation.

The island is famous as the setting of Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Green Gables, in Cavendish, is the farmhouse that inspired the novel.

Prince Edward Island National Park protects the north shore's beaches, dunes and red sandstone cliffs.

The Confederation Bridge links the island to New Brunswick.

June to September is the warmest season.

Good to know: A car is best. Seafood, especially lobster and mussels, is a highlight.

Charlottetown's centre is small, with red brick streets, restaurants and a waterfront. Lobster suppers, community meals of lobster and local dishes, are a summer tradition. The north shore beaches have warm water for the region, as the Gulf of St Lawrence warms in summer. Cycling is popular on the Confederation Trail, a former railway line that crosses the island. Lighthouses dot the coast, and some are open to visitors. Potatoes are a big island crop, and you'll see the fields everywhere. Farmers' markets sell local produce and crafts. Cavendish has family attractions near the national park beaches. Driving is easy and distances are short. Book accommodation early for July and August, the busiest months.

Small towns quiet down after September.

Sunsets over the red cliffs on the north shore are a fine way to end the day, and harbour towns such as North Rustico have fishing boats and small seafood shacks. Plan at least one slow day on the beach, and one inland among the farms and villages. Mussels from the island's bays are served steamed in most restaurants.
