A cathedral city of pre-Romanesque churches & limestone peaks Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep

Green Spain, along the Bay of Biscay, feels nothing like the south: cool, rainy and mountainous, with its own food and drink. This route spends three nights in Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, and three in the Picos de Europa. From Miami you'll connect through Madrid or another hub to Asturias airport.

How to pace it: Oviedo was the capital of the small Kingdom of Asturias in the ninth century, and its monuments from that time are listed by UNESCO. Walk the old town on arrival, and on day two visit the cathedral's Holy Chamber, whose relics and jewelled crosses are symbols of Asturias. On day three, go up Naranco hill to Santa María del Naranco, a palace later used as a church and one of the finest examples of pre-Romanesque architecture. In the evening, try cider, poured from a height to aerate it, as Asturias is Spain's main cider region.

On day four, drive to Cangas de Onís at the edge of the Picos de Europa, Spain's first national park (1918), with the Torre de Cerredo rising to 2,650 metres. Day five is for Covadonga, where Pelagius is said to have won an eighth-century battle that began the Reconquista, and the road up to the Lakes of Covadonga, two glacial lakes in a high basin. On day six, walk the Cares Gorge path, cut into the cliffs between Poncebos and Caín. Taste Cabrales, a strong blue cheese aged in mountain caves.

Practical notes: summer is the best season for the mountains, as the rest of the year is often wet, so pack rain gear even in July. A car is the easiest way to reach the trailheads.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to Spain to take a high degree of caution (updated 13 Aug 2026), and the US rates Spain Level 2 (1 Aug 2026).
