Lava tubes, a crater peak and women divers Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

Jeju, off the southern tip of the Korean peninsula, is a volcanic island of crater peaks, black-rock coasts and citrus groves. This route spends six nights on the island. From Moscow you'll connect through Seoul or another hub to Jeju. Jeju Island is South Korea's largest island, covering more than 1,800 square kilometres. It lies in the Korea Strait, about 83 kilometres south of the nearest point on the peninsula.

How to pace it: Spend days one to six on Jeju: day one, Jeju City; day two, Seongsan Ilchulbong at sunrise; day three, Manjanggul lava tube; day four, Hallasan hike; day five, Olle trail on the south coast; day six, haenyeo museum and the east coast.

The island's volcanic landscape and lava tubes were added to the UNESCO list in 2007. Hallasan, the shield volcano at the island's centre, is the highest mountain in South Korea, and trails lead to its crater. Seongsan Ilchulbong, a tuff cone rising from the sea on the east coast, is a famous spot to watch the sunrise.

Manjanggul is one of the finest lava tubes in the world, and part of it is open to visitors. The haenyeo, Jeju's women divers, harvest shellfish and seaweed from the sea without breathing equipment. Their culture is listed by UNESCO as intangible heritage. Dol hareubang, stone statues carved from volcanic rock, are a symbol of the island.

The Jeju Olle trail is a network of walking routes around the island's coast. Jeju black pork is the island's best-known dish, grilled at table. Hallabong, a large sweet citrus fruit, is grown on the island.

Jeju has been inhabited since the early Neolithic period. With its outlying islands, it makes up most of Jeju Province. Jeju is about 1.8 percent of the country's area.

Practical notes: Late spring and early autumn are the most pleasant seasons, and summer is hot and humid with a rainy spell. Jeju has many museums and parks, so a rainy day can still be filled. The Hallasan Natural Reserve was designated a South Korean Natural Monument in 1966, and Hallasan is counted among the country's three main mountains, with Jirisan and Seoraksan.

Safety: Canada's advice for South Korea is to take normal security precautions (updated 21 Aug 2026), and the US rates South Korea Level 1 (28 May 2025).
