Moscow to the Gulf of Thailand: Koh Samui, Ang Thong and Koh Tao
Moscow → Koh Samui → Koh Tao
Islands, marine park & diving Best season (general guide): Feb–Aug
The islands in the Gulf of Thailand have a different weather pattern from Phuket and the Andaman coast, so they are a good choice in the middle of the year. This route spends four nights on Koh Samui and three on Koh Tao. From Moscow you'll connect through Bangkok or another hub to Samui; check the entry rules that apply to you.
How to pace it: Spend days one to four on Koh Samui: day one, the beach; day two, Big Buddha and Fisherman's Village; day three, Ang Thong Marine Park; day four, beach day. Then spend days five to seven on Koh Tao: day five, ferry to Koh Tao; day six, dive or snorkel day; day seven, Koh Nang Yuan.
Koh Samui is the largest island in the group, with beaches, coconut palms and resorts. The Big Buddha, a golden statue on a small island linked by a causeway, is a landmark. Fisherman's Village in Bophut has a walking street market on some evenings.
Day trips go to Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park, a group of more than forty limestone islands, with kayaking, snorkelling and a viewpoint over the islands.
A ferry takes you to Koh Tao, a small island known as one of the most popular places in the world to learn to dive. Its coral reefs and clear water are good for snorkelling too.
Koh Nang Yuan, three small islands joined by sandbars, lies just off Koh Tao and has a viewpoint over the sandbars.
February to August is the driest time on this side of Thailand. The heaviest rain usually falls from October to December.
On Koh Samui, a quieter beach base suits a slower trip, while Chaweng is busier. Reserve the Ang Thong trip on a calm day.
Good to know: Ferries run between the islands several times a day. Choose a dive school with good safety standards, and respect the reefs by not touching coral. Scooters are common, but accidents are frequent, so wear a helmet or use taxis.
