Volcanic island, lava tubes & haenyeo divers Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Nov

Jeju is a volcanic island off South Korea's southern coast, with a dormant volcano at its centre, lava tubes and a coastline of black rock. This route spends three nights in Jeju City and three in Seogwipo. From Mumbai you'll connect through Seoul or another Asian hub.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Jeju City: day one, Dongmun market; day two, Seongsan Ilchulbong and Manjanggul; day three, Hallasan hike. Then spend days four to six in Seogwipo: day four, down the coast to Seogwipo; day five, Cheonjiyeon Falls and an Olle trail section; day six, coastal cliffs and cafés.

Hallasan, the highest mountain in South Korea, rises in the middle of the island, and trails climb through forest to its crater. Some routes have hiking rules or reservations, so check before you go.

On the east coast, Seongsan Ilchulbong is a crater rising from the sea, popular at sunrise. Manjanggul is a lava tube, a long tunnel left by flowing lava, and part of it is open to visitors. UNESCO lists the island's volcanic landscape.

Jeju is home to the haenyeo, women divers who harvest seafood by holding their breath, a tradition listed by UNESCO as intangible heritage. Stone statues called dol hareubang, or 'stone grandfathers', stand around the island.

Seogwipo, on the warmer south coast, has waterfalls such as Cheonjiyeon that fall into pools close to the sea. The Jeju Olle Trail, a network of walking routes around the island, passes cliffs, beaches and villages.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons. The rainy season usually comes in early summer.

Arrive at Seongsan Ilchulbong early for sunrise. On the Olle trails, choose one section a day and take a bus back, rather than trying to walk too far.

Good to know: A hire car is the easiest way to get around, though buses cover most sights. Jeju is popular with domestic tourists, so book weekends ahead. Try black pork barbecue and fresh seafood from the haenyeo.
