Old capital, island-hopping & cycling Best season (general guide): Jun–Aug

South-west Finland breaks into thousands of islands, the Archipelago Sea, which reach across to the autonomous Åland Islands. This route spends three nights in Turku and three in Åland. From Nairobi you'll connect through the Gulf, Istanbul or a European hub to Helsinki or Turku.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Turku: day one, the Aura riverside; day two, Turku Castle and the cathedral; day three, archipelago boat trip. Then spend days four to six in Åland: day four, ferry to Mariehamn, then the Pommern; day five, cycle to Kastelholm Castle; day six, island-hop by small ferry.

Turku was Finland's first capital and is its oldest city. Turku Castle, by the harbour, dates from medieval times, and the cathedral is the mother church of the Finnish Lutheran church.

Life in Turku centres on the Aura river, lined with cafés, restaurants and boats in summer. Sightseeing boats leave for the nearby islands.

Ferries cross the Archipelago Sea to Åland, an autonomous region of Finland where Swedish is the official language. Mariehamn, the capital, is a small town where the four-masted barque Pommern is moored as a museum ship.

Åland is flat and quiet, and cycling is a popular way to explore. Kastelholm Castle is a medieval fortress inland, and small cable ferries connect outer islands.

June to August brings long days and the warmest weather.

Good to know: Ferries are frequent in summer, but book cars ahead. Bikes can be hired in Mariehamn. Many shops and restaurants keep shorter hours outside the main season.

Turku is compact, and most sights sit along the river, so a bike or your feet are enough. In Åland, cycle routes are signposted, and distances are short enough for easy days. Ferries between the islands run on timetables, so plan your island hops the night before. Saunas are part of life in Finland, and many hotels and cottages have one, a good way to end a day on the water. Pack swimwear for the sea, which is cool even in July.

Bring a light jacket even in summer, as wind on the water can be cool.
