Wine country & outback ranges Best season (general guide): Mar–May, Sep–Nov

South Australia combines a relaxed capital, one of the world's best-known wine regions and the outback scenery of the Flinders Ranges. This route spends seven nights in Adelaide, the Barossa Valley and Wilpena. From Rome you'll connect through the Gulf or Asia.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Adelaide: day one, Central Market; day two, parklands and Glenelg; day three, Art Gallery and museums. Then spend days four and five in the Barossa Valley: day four, travel north to the Barossa; day five, winery visits. Then spend days six and seven in Flinders Ranges (Wilpena): day six, travel north to the Flinders Ranges; day seven, Wilpena Pound hike.

Adelaide is surrounded by parkland, and the Central Market is one of the largest covered markets in the southern hemisphere. A tram runs to the beach at Glenelg.

The Barossa Valley, an hour north, was settled by German immigrants in the nineteenth century, and its villages still have Lutheran churches and bakeries. The region is known for Shiraz, and many wineries offer tastings.

Further north, the Flinders Ranges rise from the plains. Wilpena Pound is a vast natural amphitheatre of mountains, and hikes lead to viewpoints over it. Yellow-footed rock-wallabies live on rocky slopes.

Autumn and spring are the best times, with mild weather. Summer can be very hot inland.

Adelaide is known for its festivals, particularly in late summer, when the city fills with performers. Its compact centre is easy to explore on foot, with galleries and museums along North Terrace. In the Barossa, cellar doors are often in old stone buildings, and many wineries serve regional food. In the Flinders Ranges, sunset turns the rocks deep red, and the night sky is very dark.

Good to know: A hire car is essential. Avoid driving at dawn and dusk in the outback, when kangaroos are most active. Carry water and fuel.

Carry a paper map in the ranges, where phone signal is patchy, and tell someone your plans before a long walk.

Wilpena has a resort, a campground and a visitor centre with maps and trail advice.
