Rice terraces & high mountain passes Best season (general guide): Sep–Nov, Mar–May

Vietnam's far north is a land of steep rice terraces, limestone peaks and ethnic minority villages. This route spends three nights in Sa Pa and three in Hà Giang. From Rome you'll connect via a hub to Hanoi, then travel north by train or bus. Sa Pa is a former hill station above valleys of rice terraces. Hmong and other groups live in the surrounding villages, and walks between them are the main activity.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Sa Pa: day one, train or bus from Hanoi; day two, valley walk through villages; day three, Fansipan cable car. Then spend days four to six in Hà Giang: day four, drive to Hà Giang; day five, Đồng Văn plateau; day six, Mã Pí Lèng pass.

Fansipan, the highest mountain in Indochina, rises above the town, and a cable car runs close to the summit. Hà Giang province, to the east along the Chinese border, has some of the most spectacular mountain roads in the country. The Mã Pí Lèng pass winds above a deep river gorge, and the Đồng Văn Karst Plateau is a UNESCO Global Geopark.

Markets in the highland towns draw people from surrounding villages on certain days of the week. Autumn and spring are the best seasons; winters can be cold and foggy. Sa Pa was set up as a hill station by the French in the early twentieth century. Fansipan, at about 3,143 metres, is in the Hoàng Liên Son range, and its cable car opened in 2016.

The Hmong, Dao and other groups make up most of the population around Sa Pa. Hà Giang's Lũng Cú flag tower marks one of Vietnam's northernmost points. Thắng cố, a horse-meat stew, is a highland market dish; there's plenty of rice and vegetables too. Bắc Hà, east of Sa Pa, holds a large Sunday market. Since July 2025, Sa Pa has been a ward of Lào Cai Province.

Safety: Canada's advice for Vietnam is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 22 Jun 2026), and the US rates Vietnam Level 1 (24 Jun 2026).
