Santiago to Paraná: Curitiba and Ilha do Mel
Santiago → Curitiba → Ilha do Mel
A planned green city & a car-free island with a daily visitor cap Best season (general guide): Oct–Apr
Southern Brazil's Paraná state pairs a well-ordered city on a plateau with an island where the number of visitors is capped each day. This route spends three nights in Curitiba and three on Ilha do Mel. From Santiago you'll fly to Curitiba, sometimes via São Paulo. Curitiba is the capital and largest city of Paraná, with about 1.8 million people, making it the largest city in Brazil's South Region.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Curitiba: day one, the botanical garden; day two, Niemeyer museum and the Wire Opera House; day three, old town and the Sunday market. Then spend days four to six in Ilha do Mel: day four, Serra Verde train to the coast, boat to the island; day five, lighthouse and beaches; day six, fortress walk.
The city sits on a plateau at 932 metres above sea level. It is known for its urban planning and its bus rapid transit system, which inspired similar systems around the world. The Botanical Garden of Curitiba, with its glass greenhouse, is the city's best-known landmark. The Oscar Niemeyer Museum is called the Eye Museum because of the shape of its main building.
The Serra Verde Express train descends from Curitiba through the Atlantic Forest of the Serra do Mar to Morretes, on the way to the coast. Ilha do Mel, or Island of Honey, lies about four kilometres off the Paraná coast and belongs to the municipality of Paranaguá.
The island is a permanent conservation area, with 95 percent of its land reserved for nature, and admission is capped at 5,000 people a day. The warmer months, from October to April, are best for the beaches. Curitiba's metropolitan area has 29 municipalities.
Safety: Canada asks visitors to Brazil to exercise a high degree of caution, citing crime (5 Oct 2026); the US has Brazil at Level 2 (31 Aug 2026).
