Poland Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep

This route travels through Poland's history and its mountains: the royal city of Kraków, the Tatra mountains around Zakopane and the rebuilt capital, Warsaw. From Santiago you'll connect via a European hub to Kraków and fly home from Warsaw. The itinerary spends three nights in Kraków, two nights in Zakopane and two nights in Warsaw.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Kraków: day one, Main Square; day two, Wawel and Kazimierz; day three, Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial. Then spend days four and five in Zakopane: day four, travel to Zakopane; day five, Morskie Oko or Kasprowy Wierch. Then spend days six and seven in Warsaw: day six, train to Warsaw, then Old Town; day seven, Uprising Museum and POLIN.

Kraków's old town and the Wawel Castle are among the best preserved in Central Europe, and the former Jewish district of Kazimierz is now a lively area of cafés and synagogues. A day trip to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum is a sober but important visit, and the Wieliczka salt mine is nearby. The road south leads to Zakopane, where trails climb to mountain lakes such as Morskie Oko, and a cable car rises to Kasprowy Wierch on the Slovak border. The fast train north then brings you to Warsaw, where the Old Town was carefully rebuilt after the Second World War. Its museums tell the story of the city's destruction and recovery.

Book Auschwitz-Birkenau entry in advance. In the mountains, start early in summer, as afternoon thunderstorms are common.

Polish food offers comfort after mountain walks: pierogi dumplings, żurek sour rye soup and the smoked sheep's cheese oscypek, sold from stalls in Zakopane. In Kraków, Kazimierz's food trucks and the zapiekanka, an open baguette sandwich, are good for quick meals.

Practical notes: Summer, from about June to September, is the main season for Tatra hiking. Early summer can still have snow on higher routes, July and August are busiest, and September tends to bring more stable weather and fewer crowds.
