Two great atolls of lagoons and reef passes Best season (general guide): Apr–Nov

The Tuamotus, north-east of Tahiti, are a chain of coral atolls with vast lagoons, reached by small planes. This route spends three nights on Rangiroa and three on Fakarava. From Santiago you'll fly to Tahiti, sometimes via Easter Island, then continue on Air Tahiti's domestic flights, which also link the atolls.

How to pace it: Rangiroa, whose name means vast sky, is the largest atoll in the Tuamotus and one of the largest in the world, about 355 kilometres from Tahiti. Stay near Avatoru, the chief town. On day two, dive or snorkel the Tiputa Pass, where divers ride the current between lagoon and ocean among dolphins and sharks. Day three is for a boat to the Blue Lagoon, a shallow lagoon within the lagoon; Rangiroa also has vineyards on a motu that produce one of the few coral-grown wines in the world.

On day four, fly to Fakarava, the second-largest Tuamotu atoll, about 60 kilometres long and 21 wide, with a lagoon of about 1,112 square kilometres. The atoll and its neighbours are part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Give day five to the southern pass, famous among divers for large gatherings of grey reef sharks, and day six to the lagoon and its pink-sand beaches. Fakarava's main pass is one of the widest in French Polynesia, and Rangiroa's nearest neighbour is Tikehau, 12 kilometres to the west.

Practical notes: the drier season, from about April to November, is the most comfortable. Flights are small and infrequent, so book them with your international ticket and keep a buffer day before flying home.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to French Polynesia to take normal security precautions (updated 16 Jun 2026), and the US rates it Level 1 (2 Dec 2024).
