São Paulo to the Western Cape: Franschhoek and Paternoster
São Paulo → Franschhoek → Paternoster
A Huguenot wine valley & a whitewashed fishing village Best season (general guide): Oct–Apr
Within two hours of Cape Town, the Western Cape offers both mountain wine valleys and a coast of white villages and cold Atlantic surf. This route spends three nights in Franschhoek and three in Paternoster. From São Paulo you'll fly to Cape Town, then drive. Franschhoek, whose name is Afrikaans for French Corner, is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, about 75 kilometres from Cape Town.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Franschhoek: day one, drive from Cape Town; day two, wine tram; day three, Huguenot Monument and the pass. Then spend days four to six in Paternoster: day four, road north to the West Coast; day five, Cape Columbine reserve; day six, west Coast National Park.
Franschhoek was settled by French Huguenots in the late seventeenth century. Before that, it was known as Oliphants Hoek, because of the elephants in the valley. The Huguenot Monument, at the end of the main street, commemorates the settlers. The Franschhoek Wine Tram takes visitors on hop-on, hop-off routes between wine estates. Franschhoek is one of the main areas of the Cape Winelands.
Paternoster is one of the oldest fishing villages on South Africa's West Coast, about 145 kilometres north of Cape Town, at Cape Columbine. The origin of its name is unknown; many believe it refers to the prayers of shipwrecked Portuguese sailors, since paternoster is Latin for Our Father. The Cape Columbine Lighthouse stands on the rocky point in a nature reserve.
West Coast National Park, to the south, is known for its spring wild flowers and its lagoon. Rooibos, a red bush tea, grows only in the Western Cape's Cederberg region to the north. The warm, dry summer, from October to April, is the best season.
Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in South Africa because of crime (advisory updated 28 Sep 2026), and the US rates South Africa Level 2 (27 May 2025).
