Going-to-the-Sun Road & mountain lakes Best season (general guide): Jul–Sep

Glacier National Park in Montana has mountain lakes, wildlife and one of America's great drives. This route spends two nights in Whitefish and four in the park. From Seoul you'll connect via Seattle or another hub to Kalispell. Whitefish is a relaxed town on a lake, with a ski mountain that is open in summer for hikes.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Whitefish: day one, Whitefish Lake; day two, town and mountain. Then spend days three to six at Glacier National Park: day three, drive to Lake McDonald; day four, Going-to-the-Sun Road; day five, Many Glacier hikes; day six, Logan Pass trails.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road crosses the park, climbing to Logan Pass on the Continental Divide. Lake McDonald, the largest lake in the park, has colourful stones on its shores. Many Glacier, on the east side, has trails to lakes and glaciers, and wildlife such as bears and mountain goats. The park is part of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, shared with Canada.

July to September is the main season, when the road is fully open.

Good to know: A vehicle reservation may be needed for the road in summer. Carry bear spray and follow park rules.

Kalispell's small airport is close to both Whitefish and the park entrance. A car is essential, as public transport in the area is limited. Inside the park, a free shuttle runs along part of the Going-to-the-Sun Road in summer, helpful for one-way hikes. Lodges and campgrounds inside the park book up far ahead, so reserve early. Weather in the mountains changes quickly, and snow can fall even in summer at higher elevations. Bring layers, rain gear and sturdy boots. Keep a safe distance from wildlife and store food properly.

Huckleberry treats are a summer speciality. Early mornings are the best time to see wildlife and to find parking at popular trailheads. Pack a lunch, as food options inside the park are limited. Check the park's road status page each morning, as conditions can change overnight.
