A diving town & rock-cut tombs above a harbour Best season (general guide): May–Jun, Sep–Oct

Turkey's south-west coast, ancient Lycia, combines mountains, coves and ruins along one of the most scenic roads in the country. This route spends three nights in Fethiye and three in Kaş. From Seoul you'll connect through Istanbul to Dalaman, near Fethiye. Fethiye is a district of Muğla Province and one of the main destinations on the Turkish Riviera. It was formerly known as Makri.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Fethiye: day one, the harbour; day two, rock tombs and Kayaköy; day three, Ölüdeniz lagoon. Then spend days four to six in Kaş: day four, bus along the coast to Kaş; day five, boat to Kekova; day six, Kaputaş beach and the Lycian Way.

Above the town, the Tomb of Amyntas is a temple-fronted tomb cut into the cliff in the fourth century BC. Ölüdeniz, a sheltered lagoon nearby, is a popular spot for paragliding from the mountain above. Kayaköy is a village of abandoned stone houses, left empty after the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s.

Saklıkent Gorge, inland, is a narrow canyon where you can wade up a cold river. Xanthos and Letoon, two ancient Lycian sites between Fethiye and Kaş, are listed by UNESCO. Kaş, 168 kilometres west of Antalya, is a small fishing, diving and yachting town. As a resort it is relatively unspoiled. Boats from Kaş visit Kekova, where the ruins of an ancient town lie partly underwater after earthquakes.

Kaputaş beach, a cove between Kaş and Kalkan, is reached by steps from the coast road. The Lycian Way, a long-distance trail of more than 500 kilometres, passes through the area. Late spring and early autumn avoid the hottest weeks.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Türkiye and to avoid all travel within 10 km of the borders with Iraq and Syria (advisory updated 29 Sep 2026). The US rates Türkiye Level 2 (9 Jun 2026). The Lycian coast is far from those areas.

Fethiye's population was about 178,000 in 2022. Buses link Fethiye and Kaş along the coast road.
