A Venetian harbour town & an underground canyon Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Slovenia's sliver of Adriatic coast is short, but it packs in one of the prettiest old towns on the sea. Behind it rises the limestone Karst plateau, riddled with caves. This route spends four nights in Piran and two on the Karst near the Škocjan Caves. From Seoul you'll connect through a European hub to Trieste or Ljubljana, then drive.

How to pace it: Spend days one to four in Piran: day one, the harbour at dusk; day two, Tartini Square and the town walls; day three, Sečovlje salt pans; day four, swim from the rocks. Then spend days five and six at the Škocjan Caves: day five, drive inland to the Karst; day six, underground canyon tour.

Base yourself in Piran, on the tip of a peninsula, its lanes of Venetian Gothic houses packed between the harbour and the open sea.

A walk up to the old town walls gives views over the red roofs and across the bay towards Italy and Croatia.

South of the town, visit the Sečovlje salt pans, still worked by hand in summer and protected as a nature park, with birds in the shallow basins.

Take the guided tour of the Škocjan Caves, listed by UNESCO, one of the great cave systems of Europe. The Reka river disappears underground and has carved a vast canyon, crossed by a footbridge high above the water.

Practical notes: May to September is the warm season for swimming; the caves keep a steady cool temperature all year, so bring a layer for the tour.

Try seafood on the coast, and in the Karst villages, air-dried pršut ham and the local red wine, teran.

Safety: Canada's advice for Slovenia is to exercise normal security precautions (updated 11 Aug 2026), and the US rates Slovenia Level 1 (15 May 2026).
