Medina, Carthage & island synagogue Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

Tunisia, on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa, has a historic medina, the ruins of Carthage and the island of Djerba. This route spends three nights in Tunis and three on Djerba. From Shanghai you'll connect through Istanbul, the Gulf or a European hub. The medina of Tunis, listed by UNESCO, is a maze of souks, mosques and old houses. The Bardo National Museum holds one of the largest collections of Roman mosaics in the world.

Carthage, once the capital of a great empire, lies in ruins on the coast, listed by UNESCO. Sidi Bou Said, on a cliff nearby, is a village of white houses with blue doors. A short flight takes you to Djerba, an island in the south, listed by UNESCO for its settlement pattern. Houmt Souk is its main town.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Tunis: day one, the medina; day two, Bardo Museum; day three, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said. Then spend days four to six on Djerba: day four, fly to Djerba, then Houmt Souk; day five, El Ghriba and Djerbahood; day six, beach day.

Practical notes: In Tunisia, spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. In the souks, bargaining is expected, so take your time, and dress modestly in the medina. Carthage's ruins are spread out, so a taxi or a guide helps. On Djerba, hire a bike or a car to explore the villages, including Erriadh, where Djerbahood is an open-air street-art project. Couscous and fresh fish are found everywhere.

Safety note: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Tunisia because of the countrywide risk of terrorism. It advises avoiding all travel within 20 km of the Algerian border, within 30 km of the Libyan border, in Kasserine governorate and in the military zone south of Remada, and advises against non-essential travel to the Delegation of Remada and Mount Orbata (updated 26 May 2026). The US rates Tunisia Level 2 and says do not travel within 16 km of the Libyan and Algerian borders or to the desert south of Remada (issued 21 May 2026). Tunis and Djerba are outside these zones.

Sidi Bou Said's cafés look out over the Gulf of Tunis, a good place to rest after the ruins with mint tea.
