A walled upper town & a lake with a mountain island Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Bergamo is often just an airport name to travellers heading for Milan, yet the old city on its hill is one of the finest in Lombardy, and a short train ride away lies the least crowded of the big lakes. This route spends three nights in Bergamo and three on Lake Iseo. From Singapore you'll connect through a hub to Milan, whose airports include Bergamo's own.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Bergamo: day one, funicular to the upper town; day two, Città Alta and the walls; day three, the lower town and the Carrara gallery. Then spend days four to six at Lake Iseo: day four, train to Iseo, then the lakefront; day five, ferry to Monte Isola; day six, Franciacorta vineyards.

Bergamo lies about 40 kilometres north-east of Milan and around 30 kilometres from both Lake Como and Lake Iseo, with the Bergamo Alps rising straight behind it. They are part of a UNESCO listing of Venetian defence works shared with sites in Croatia and Montenegro.

A funicular climbs from the lower town to the upper gate. Lake Iseo is the fourth-largest lake in Lombardy and is fed by the Oglio river. It is split almost equally between the provinces of Bergamo and Brescia.

The low hills south of the lake are Franciacorta, a wine area known for its sparkling wine made in the traditional method. May to September brings the warmest weather for the lake. The lake lies near the Val Camonica.

Getting there and around: fly into Milan, go on to Bergamo overland, go on to Lake Iseo by train, and return by train to Milan for the flight home.

Safety: Canada's advice for Italy is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 29 Sep 2026), and the US rates Italy Level 2 (10 Sep 2026).
