Rock engravings & desert-adapted elephants Best season (general guide): May–Oct

Damaraland, in north-west Namibia, is a wild region of red rocks, dry riverbeds and ancient art. This route spends one night in Windhoek, one at Spitzkoppe and four in Damaraland. From Singapore you'll connect through Johannesburg or the Gulf to Windhoek.

How to pace it: Spend day one in Windhoek: arrive and settle in. Then spend day two in Spitzkoppe: drive to Spitzkoppe. Then spend days three to six in Damaraland: day three, into Damaraland; day four, Twyfelfontein engravings; day five, petrified forest; day six, desert elephant tracking.

Windhoek is a small capital with a calm feel.

Spitzkoppe, a group of granite peaks, rises from the plains like an island.

Twyfelfontein, listed by UNESCO, has one of the largest groups of rock engravings in Africa.

Elephants in this region have adapted to the desert, walking long distances to find water. Guided trips track them along dry riverbeds. A petrified forest nearby holds the trunks of ancient trees turned to stone.

May to October is the dry season.

Good to know: Distances are long and roads are gravel, so drive slowly and carry water and fuel. Book lodges ahead.

Windhoek's restaurants are good for a final meal before heading into the bush. Spitzkoppe has campsites and simple lodges, and the rocks glow red at sunset. In Damaraland, stay at lodges that work with local communities and employ guides from nearby villages. Twyfelfontein's engravings can only be visited with a guide, who explains their meaning. Desert elephants move constantly, so tracking trips can take a full day. A high-clearance vehicle helps on the gravel roads, and you should carry a spare tyre. Nights are cold in the dry season, so bring a warm jacket, and keep your distance from wildlife. Fill up with fuel and water at every opportunity.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Namibia (advisory updated 26 May 2026). The US rates Namibia Level 2 (issued 15 May 2026). Avoid driving at night, when animals on the road are hard to see.
