Gothic cathedral & mountain villages Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

Mallorca is the largest of Spain's Balearic Islands, and beyond its beaches lie a Gothic capital and a mountain range listed by UNESCO. This route spends three nights in Palma and three in Sóller. From Singapore you'll connect through a European hub to Palma.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Palma: day one, La Seu and the old town; day two, Bellver Castle and the harbour; day three, markets and beaches. Then spend days four to six in Sóller: day four, vintage train to Sóller; day five, Deià and Valldemossa; day six, Sa Calobra by boat.

Palma's cathedral, La Seu, rises above the sea wall, and its interior is flooded with light from huge rose windows. Walk the old town behind it, a maze of courtyards and narrow streets. Bellver Castle, on a hill west of the centre, is unusual for its circular shape and has views over the bay.

Mallorcan pastries such as the spiral ensaïmada are sold in old bakeries, and the Mercat de l'Olivar is the city's main market.

Sóller sits in a valley of orange and lemon groves, and you can take a tram on to the port.

The Serra de Tramuntana, listed by UNESCO, is a range of terraced slopes, stone villages and coastal cliffs. Visit Deià and Valldemossa, among its best-known villages. Boats from Port de Sóller sail to Sa Calobra, where a gorge meets the sea.

April to June and September to October are the best months for walking and sightseeing. Avoid July and August if you can, when it is hot and busy.

In Palma, the old town is best explored on foot in the early evening. In Sóller, the tram to the port runs through orange groves and is a pleasant way to end the day.

Practical notes: the train and buses cover the main sights, but a car helps for the smaller villages. Mountain roads are narrow and winding, and cyclists share them, so drive carefully. Book the Sóller train ahead in summer.
