Angkor & Khmer history Best season (general guide): Nov–Mar

Cambodia's temples at Angkor are among the largest religious monuments in the world, and this route pairs several days among them with the capital, Phnom Penh. From Singapore there are non-stop flights to Siem Reap, and you can fly or travel by road between the two cities.

The Angkor Archaeological Park, listed by UNESCO, covers the remains of the capitals of the Khmer Empire. Angkor Wat at sunrise, the faces of the Bayon at Angkor Thom and the roots wrapped round Ta Prohm are the classic sights, and a multi-day pass gives time to visit more distant temples like Banteay Srei. Siem Reap's town has markets and evening performances, including the circus run by Phare. In Phnom Penh, the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda stand by the river, and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Choeung Ek memorial tell the story of the Khmer Rouge regime with great sensitivity.

The dry season from about November to April is the best time, with November to February the coolest. March and April are very hot.

Buy Angkor passes from the official ticket office or online. Dress modestly in temples, and take time at the memorials, which are places of remembrance.

How to pace it: plan two full days at Angkor, starting with sunrise at Angkor Wat on the first morning and visiting the more distant temples on later days. Rest in the middle of the day when it is hottest, and return in the late afternoon. In Phnom Penh, the Royal Palace and the genocide memorials fit into one full day, but leave time between them, as the memorials can be emotionally difficult. You can fly between the two cities or take a bus, which takes several hours.
