A walled Hanseatic town & sea stacks Best season (general guide): Jun–Aug

Gotland, Sweden's largest island, sits in the middle of the Baltic and has a mild, sunny summer. This route spends four nights in Visby and two on the small island of Fårö. From Singapore you'll connect via Stockholm to Visby. Visby was a major Hanseatic trading town, and UNESCO lists it as the best-preserved fortified commercial town in northern Europe.

How to pace it: Spend days one to four in Visby: day one, the town wall; day two, church ruins and the botanical garden; day three, Gotland Museum; day four, cycle the coast. Then spend days five and six in Fårö: day five, drive north, ferry to Fårö; day six, sea stacks at Langhammars.

Visby's stone town wall, 3.4 kilometres long, still encloses the old town, which is scattered with the ruins of medieval churches. In August the town hosts Medieval Week, with markets, music and costumes. Fårö, reached by a short free ferry from Gotland's northern tip, is known for its raukar, limestone sea stacks shaped by waves. The film director Ingmar Bergman lived and worked on the island.

Beaches, sheep pastures and stone houses fill the rest of this quiet island. June to August is the season; outside summer many places close. Visby was added to the UNESCO list in 1995. Gotland has more than 90 medieval churches still in use, many with wall paintings, and Visby's cathedral, St Mary's, dates from the thirteenth century.

Ingmar Bergman filmed several of his works on Fårö, including Persona, and a Bergman Week festival is held on the island each summer. Gotland's Almedalen Week, held in Visby, is a yearly gathering where Swedish politicians give speeches in the park. Saffranspannkaka, a saffron rice pudding cake served with dewberry jam, is Gotland's speciality. Gotland's limestone also produced the Gotlandic picture stones, carved slabs from the Viking age now shown in the Gotland Museum.

The town's decline as a Hanseatic city in the late Middle Ages is why so many medieval stone houses survive. The Gotland Museum was founded in 1875.

Safety: Canada's advice for Sweden is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 11 Aug 2026), and the US rates Sweden Level 2 (18 May 2026).
