Stockholm to New South Wales: the Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley
Stockholm → Blue Mountains → Hunter Valley
Sandstone cliffs & wine country Best season (general guide): Sep–May
West and north of Sydney lie two very different escapes. This route spends three nights in the Blue Mountains and three in the Hunter Valley. From Stockholm you'll connect through Asia or the Gulf to Sydney.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in the Blue Mountains: day one, train to Katoomba; day two, Three Sisters and Scenic World; day three, Jenolan Caves. Then spend days four to six in the Hunter Valley: day four, drive to the Hunter; day five, winery day; day six, cycle the vineyards.
UNESCO lists the Greater Blue Mountains Area for its eucalyptus forests.
At Katoomba, the Three Sisters rock formation overlooks a valley. Scenic World has a steep railway and cable cars.
Jenolan Caves, further west, are limestone caves.
The Hunter Valley is one of Australia's oldest wine regions.
September to May is the best time.
Good to know: Trains reach Katoomba from Sydney.
Katoomba is the main town in the Blue Mountains, with cafés, galleries and old guesthouses. Walking tracks run along the cliff tops, with lookouts over the Jamison Valley. The Prince Henry Cliff Walk links several viewpoints. The valleys are often filled with a blue haze, which gives the mountains their name. Leura, next to Katoomba, has gardens and a pretty main street. Wentworth Falls has longer walks down into the valley. In the Hunter Valley, cellar doors offer tastings of Semillon and Shiraz, and many wineries have restaurants. Hot-air balloon flights over the vineyards leave at dawn. Hire a driver or join a tour if you plan to taste wine. Bushfire risk is high in summer, so check conditions before walks. Mornings in the mountains can be cold, so bring a jacket.
Canada advises normal precautions in Australia (advisory updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates it Level 1 (issued 18 Aug 2026).
Stay at least one night in a historic guesthouse in Katoomba or Leura, and save a slow last morning in the Hunter for a café breakfast among the vines, and keep the rest of the plan relaxed and unhurried.
