Windy port medina & mountain villages Best season (general guide): Mar–May, Sep–Nov

Morocco's Atlantic coast and the High Atlas offer two very different escapes. This route spends three nights in Essaouira and three in Imlil, below Jebel Toubkal. From Stockholm you'll fly to Essaouira or Marrakech, directly or via a European hub.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Essaouira: day one, the ramparts; day two, the medina and port; day three, beach and argan cooperatives. Then spend days four to six in Imlil: day four, road via Marrakech to Imlil; day five, valley walk to Berber villages; day six, hike toward the Toubkal refuge.

Essaouira, once called Mogador, is a fortified port whose medina is listed by UNESCO. Its walls face the ocean, and the fishing port is full of blue boats.

The town is known for its strong winds and for the Gnaoua World Music Festival.

Argan trees grow in the region, and women's cooperatives produce argan oil.

Imlil is a village in the High Atlas, the starting point for walks into Toubkal National Park. Jebel Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons. Summit treks need fitness, a guide and mountain gear.

Good to know: Buses link Essaouira and Marrakech, and taxis reach Imlil. Dress modestly in villages.

Essaouira's medina is easy to navigate, with straight main streets inside the walls. Grilled fish at the stalls by the port is a must. Wood workshops sell boxes and carvings made from thuya. The beach is long, but the wind makes it better for walking than sunbathing. Imlil is cool even in summer, so bring layers. Local guides lead walks to villages and up the valleys, and mules carry bags on longer treks. Stay in a guesthouse with mountain views and enjoy tagine and mint tea after a day on the trails. Allow time for the road from Marrakech, which climbs through the foothills. Travel lightly, as streets in the villages are steep and rough.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Morocco because of terrorism; its avoid-all zones are near the Algerian border and Western Sahara, far from this route (advisory updated 26 May 2026). The US rates Morocco Level 2 (issued 4 Sep 2026).
