Monasteries & Roman ruins Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Bulgaria combines Orthodox monasteries, Roman ruins and mountain scenery, and it is still good value compared with much of Europe. This route spends a week between Sofia, the Rila mountains and Plovdiv. From Sydney you'll need at least two connections, often through the Gulf and Istanbul.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Sofia: day one, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral; day two, Boyana Church and Vitosha; day three, markets and museums. Then spend day four in Rila Monastery: into the mountains, then Rila Monastery. Then spend days five to seven in Plovdiv: day five, travel to Plovdiv, then the Roman theatre; day six, old town and Kapana; day seven, free day or Bachkovo Monastery.

Sofia's golden-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the city's landmark. You can see Roman ruins uncovered in the metro and under the central squares. On the city's edge, the small Boyana Church has medieval frescoes, and UNESCO lists it. Vitosha, the mountain above the city, offers walking trails within easy reach.

Visit Rila Monastery, set in a forested valley, the most important monastery in Bulgaria. Its striped arches and painted church are listed by UNESCO. Staying nearby lets you see it in the quiet of the early morning.

End in Plovdiv, one of the oldest cities in Europe. Its old town sits on hills, with painted merchants' houses from the nineteenth century, and a Roman theatre that still hosts concerts in summer. Below the old town lies the Kapana district, which hosts the Kapana Fest.

May to September is the best season, with warm days and mild evenings. The mountains can be cool even in summer, so pack a layer.

Practical notes: buses run between Sofia and Plovdiv, but Rila is easiest with a hire car, a driver or a tour. Dress modestly in monasteries, with shoulders and knees covered. The Cyrillic alphabet is used everywhere, so learning a few letters helps with signs.

Allow an unhurried evening to wander the lanes below the old town.
