Modernist villa, palace gardens & wine cellars Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Moravia, the eastern half of Czechia, is a land of wine, castles and gentle hills. This route spends three nights in Brno and three around Lednice and Mikulov. From Tashkent you'll connect via Istanbul, Vienna or Prague to Brno.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Brno: day one, the old town; day two, Villa Tugendhat; day three, Špilberk and the ossuary. Then spend days four to six in Lednice and Mikulov: day four, train to Břeclav, bus to Lednice; day five, Valtice and the landscape park; day six, Mikulov and wine cellars.

Walk up to Špilberk Castle above the old town, once a notorious prison. Beneath the Church of St James, the Brno Ossuary holds the bones of thousands of people.

In the south, near the Austrian border, the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape is one of the largest landscaped areas in Europe, listed by UNESCO, with palaces, follies and parks.

At Lednice Castle, a Neo-Gothic palace, explore the gardens, the greenhouse and the minaret in the park.

Base yourself in Mikulov, a small town under a castle and a hill topped with a chapel, surrounded by vineyards. Try Moravian wine, mostly white, in the village cellars.

May to September is the warmest season, with wine festivals in late summer.

Practical notes: trains link Brno with Břeclav for Lednice, and buses reach Mikulov. Hire a bike to explore the flat landscape park.

Brno is a university city with a busy café scene, and you can take trams to get around. In South Moravia, wine villages are close together and many have cellar lanes where small producers open their doors. Cycle routes link several of the villages, and bikes can be hired in larger towns. Keep a day free for a slow lunch in a vineyard village rather than trying to see everything on the map.

Koláče, round pastries with sweet fillings, are sold in bakeries everywhere.

Safety: Canada's advice for Czechia is to take normal security precautions (updated 11 August 2026), and the US rates Czechia Level 1 (8 Jan 2026).
