Tashkent to Oregon: Portland, the Columbia Gorge and the coast
Tashkent → Portland, Oregon → Cannon Beach
Waterfalls, sea stacks & a food-cart city Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep
Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest, combines a relaxed city, a river gorge full of waterfalls and a wild coast. This route spends three nights in Portland and three in Cannon Beach. From Tashkent you'll connect through Europe or Asia to Portland.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Portland, Oregon: day one, downtown and Powell's; day two, Japanese Garden; day three, Columbia Gorge and Multnomah Falls. Then spend days four to six in Cannon Beach: day four, drive to the coast; day five, Haystack Rock at low tide; day six, Ecola State Park.
Portland is known for its parks, coffee and food carts. Powell's Books is one of the largest independent bookshops in the world, filling a city block.
The Portland Japanese Garden, in the hills above the city, is a peaceful place for a morning.
East of the city, the Columbia River Gorge has many waterfalls. Multnomah Falls, the best known, drops in two tiers below a stone bridge.
On the coast, Cannon Beach is overlooked by Haystack Rock, a sea stack where tide pools appear at low tide and seabirds nest. Ecola State Park, nearby, has trails through forest above the sea.
June to September is the driest season.
Practical notes: a car is best for the gorge and the coast. Check tide tables before exploring the tide pools.
Portland's neighbourhoods each have their own character, with markets, breweries and parks. Public transport and bike paths make it easy to get around without a car in the city. Plan the Columbia Gorge as a full day, with stops at several waterfalls and viewpoints. Arrive at Multnomah Falls early, as parking fills quickly. On the coast, Cannon Beach is a walkable town of galleries and cafés. Watch for sneaker waves on the beaches, and never turn your back on the ocean. Rain jackets are useful even in summer. Ecola State Park's trails lead through Sitka spruce forest to viewpoints over the sea. Fresh clam chowder is easy to find in the coast towns.
Layers help: the coast is often cool and foggy even when Portland is warm.
Safety: Canada's advice for US is to take normal security precautions (updated 10 October 2026), and this is a domestic US trip with no State Department advisory.
