Tashkent to Estonia: Tartu and Lahemaa
Tashkent → Tartu → Lahemaa
A student city & a coastal national park Best season (general guide): May–Sep
Estonia beyond Tallinn is a land of forests, bogs and quiet towns. This route spends three nights in Tartu and three in Lahemaa National Park. From Tashkent you'll connect via Istanbul or another hub to Tallinn, then take the bus or train south.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Tartu: day one, bus from Tallinn; day two, Town Hall Square and Toome Hill; day three, university museums. Then spend days four to six in Lahemaa: day four, drive to Lahemaa; day five, Viru Bog boardwalk; day six, Palmse Manor and fishing villages.
Town Hall Square has a fountain sculpture of two kissing students, and wooded Toome Hill behind it holds the ruins of a cathedral. A boardwalk crosses the Viru Bog, with a viewing tower above the pools and moss.
Restored manor houses such as Palmse show how Baltic German landowners lived. May to September is the warm season, with long light evenings in midsummer. Tartu is Estonia's second-largest city. Its university has a famous observatory where Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve made measurements for the Struve Geodetic Arc, now listed by UNESCO. The city's Estonian National Museum, opened in a new building in 2016 on a former Soviet airfield, tells the story of the country.
Lahemaa National Park covers both land and sea and is known for its large glacial boulders, called erratics. Palmse Manor, a baroque estate, is the park's visitor centre area. Smoked fish from coastal villages and dark rye bread are staples of the local table. Tartu hosts a well-known student festival each spring, and the AHHAA Science Centre is popular with families. Estonia's Song Festival tradition began in Tartu in 1869.
Safety: Canada's advice for Estonia is to exercise normal security precautions (updated 11 Aug 2026), and the US rates Estonia Level 1 (31 Mar 2026).
