US East Coast cities Best season (general guide): Late Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

The north-east of the United States has three of its most important cities linked by a single rail corridor, so you can travel between them without a car or domestic flights. This route starts in New York, heads north to Boston and then south to Washington. From Tel Aviv you'll fly to New York, and you can fly home from Washington.

New York deserves the most time: the museums along Fifth Avenue, Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge walk, and evenings on Broadway or in the neighbourhoods of the Lower East Side and Brooklyn. Amtrak trains take you north to Boston, where the red-brick Freedom Trail links sites from the American Revolution, and the North End and Harvard Square are good for wandering. Then it's back down the corridor to Washington, where the National Mall stretches from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, lined with museums. Some popular museums need free timed passes, so plan ahead.

Late April to June and September to October are the most comfortable seasons in all three cities. Summers are hot and humid, and winters bring snow to New York and Boston. Washington's cherry blossoms around late March and early April draw large crowds.

Northeast Regional trains are cheaper and stop more often, while Acela is faster. Check Amtrak's service notices, as engineering work can reduce weekend services.

Pacing note: book trains and timed museum passes for Washington at the same time as your hotels.
