Lapland winter Best season (general guide): Dec–Mar

Finnish Lapland in winter offers snow, quiet forests, husky and reindeer rides and the chance of seeing the northern lights. This route pairs the Arctic Circle town of Rovaniemi with the smaller village of Saariselkä further north. From Tokyo you'll usually fly via Helsinki to Rovaniemi. The two stops are linked by a bus or a drive of a few hours, and you can fly home from Ivalo. The itinerary spends three nights in Rovaniemi and three nights in Saariselkä.

How to pace it: After you arrive from Tokyo, Rovaniemi has days one to three: the Arktikum on day one, a husky or reindeer ride on day two, and Santa Claus Village on day three. Saariselkä takes days four to six: take the bus north on day four, go on a snowshoe walk and watch for the aurora on day five, and visit the Siida museum in Inari on day six.

Rovaniemi has the most choice. Santa Claus Village, on the Arctic Circle line, is popular with families, while the Arktikum museum explains life and science in the north. Husky and reindeer farms around the town offer sled rides through the forest. Saariselkä is quieter and darker at night, with downhill and cross-country ski trails, snowshoe walks in the national park and accommodation designed for watching the sky, including glass-roofed cabins. Lapland's indigenous Sámi culture can be explored at the Siida museum in nearby Inari.

From about December to March, snow is reliable and all winter activities run. December has the longest nights but is also the busiest and most expensive period around Christmas, while February and March bring more daylight, often good snow and plenty of chances for the aurora. Visit Finland says the aurora season runs from late August to April.

Temperatures can fall well below freezing, so most operators supply thermal suits for outdoor activities. Book Christmas-period trips well in advance.

Finnish saunas are part of daily life in Lapland, and many cabins and hotels have their own. Dinner menus often feature reindeer, salmon and cloudberries. If you want a quieter base than central Rovaniemi, stay in one of the countryside lodges along the river.
