Humpback whales & sheltered sailing Best season (general guide): Jul–Oct

Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom of many islands. This route spends one night in Nuku'alofa and five in Vava'u. From Tokyo you'll connect via Fiji or Auckland to Tongatapu. Nuku'alofa, the capital, is on the main island, Tongatapu. Vava'u, to the north, is a group of islands around a sheltered harbour, the Port of Refuge, popular with sailors.

How to pace it: Spend day one in Nuku'alofa: the capital. Then spend days two to six in Vava'u: day two, fly to Vava'u, then Neiafu; day three, whale-watching trip; day four, island-hopping by boat; day five, island beaches; day six, rest day.

Humpback whales come to Tonga's waters to breed and calve in the southern winter, and licensed operators offer whale trips. Boat trips weave between the islands of the group, stopping at beaches and snorkel spots. Neiafu is the main town. July to October is the whale season.

Good to know: Flights are small and weather-dependent. Sunday is a day of rest in Tonga, and most businesses close.

Fua'amotu airport on Tongatapu is a short drive from Nuku'alofa. Flights to Vava'u are short, but schedules change, so allow buffer time. Whale swims are regulated, and operators must be licensed, so book with an approved company. Swimming with whales depends on the animals' behaviour, so there is no guarantee. Vava'u has small guesthouses and resorts, some on outer islands reached by boat. Bring cash, as card payment is limited outside the main town. The sun is strong, so bring sun protection. Tonga is conservative, so swimwear is for beaches and boats only.

Dress modestly in villages. Sunday church services welcome visitors and are known for their singing. Dress smartly and modestly if you attend. Outside the whale season, Vava'u's sheltered waters are good for sailing and kayaking, and the islands are quieter. Ask your guesthouse about local events during your stay. Bring a light rain jacket and reef shoes for the outer islands. Keep the last full day in Vava'u light, in case the flight back is moved.
