A mountain college town & a resort near Yellowstone Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep, Dec–Mar

South-west Montana combines a lively mountain town with resort country on the doorstep of Yellowstone. This route spends three nights in Bozeman and three in Big Sky. From Toronto you'll connect through a US hub to Bozeman. Bozeman is home to Montana State University.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Bozeman: day one, Main Street; day two, Museum of the Rockies; day three, hike in the Bridger range. Then spend days four to six in Big Sky: day four, road up the Gallatin canyon; day five, Lone Peak tram; day six, day trip into Yellowstone.

The Museum of the Rockies, part of the university, is known for its dinosaur fossils, many found in Montana. Practical notes: Big Sky is about 45 miles by road south-west of Bozeman; tourism is its main industry. Big Sky Resort spreads across Lone Peak, and a tram climbs close to its summit. The road to Big Sky follows the Gallatin River, where scenes of the film A River Runs Through It were shot.

Plan a day trip to Yellowstone, the first national park in the world, just to the south; its western entrance is about an hour from Big Sky. Yellowstone is a UNESCO site, known for geysers, hot springs and wildlife. Bridger Bowl, a ski area run as a non-profit, is just north of Bozeman. Bozeman's population was about 53,000 in 2020, and its metropolitan area covers all of Gallatin County.

Big Sky had about 3,600 people in 2020, up from about 2,300 in 2010, and lies in Gallatin and Madison counties. Big Sky was founded as a resort in the 1970s by the newscaster Chet Huntley. Bozeman is named after John Bozeman, who opened the Bozeman Trail in the 1860s. The Gallatin Range and the Madison Range rise on either side of the Gallatin Canyon.

Bozeman's Main Street has many historic buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Go in summer for hiking and fishing, and in winter for skiing.

Safety: Canada's advice for US is to take normal security precautions (updated 10 Oct 2026), and this is a domestic US trip with no State Department advisory.
