Colombia coffee & coast Best season (general guide): Dec–Mar, Jul–Aug

Colombia's Caribbean coast and its coffee-growing highlands are a great pairing, from the heat of a colonial port to cool mountain valleys. This route starts in Cartagena, flies to Medellín and continues to Salento in the coffee region. From Vancouver you'll connect, often in the United States or Mexico, to reach Cartagena.

Cartagena's walled old town is best explored in the early morning and evening, when the heat is gentler, and the San Felipe de Barajas fortress overlooks the city. Boat trips go to the Rosario Islands. In Medellín, the Metrocable lines carry commuters and visitors over the hillside neighbourhoods.

Canada's advisory (9 Oct 2026) says to avoid the city's vulnerable neighbourhoods, known as comunas, even on a guided tour. The route then heads south to the coffee region, which is listed by UNESCO as the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia. In Salento, you can walk through the Cocora Valley among towering wax palms and visit farms to see coffee grown and processed.

The drier months from about December to March and again in July and August are the most popular. The coffee region is wet throughout the year, so expect mud on the Cocora trail.

Check your government's travel advice for Colombia, as some regions are not recommended. Use registered taxis or apps in cities.

Pacing note: Cartagena is very hot at midday, so plan indoor time then. The road from Pereira to Salento is short.

Safety note: Canada advises a high degree of caution across Colombia (advisory updated 9 Oct 2026) because of crime, including drink-spiking in Cartagena and Medellín. On 10 August 2026, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck near San José del Palmar in Chocó, and damage was reported in cities including Pereira and Manizales, so check that roads and services are running before you go.
