Seven Mile Beach, stingrays and coral walls Best season (general guide): Dec–Apr

The Cayman Islands, south of Cuba, are known for clear water, coral reefs and calm beaches. This route spends six nights on Grand Cayman. From Vancouver you'll connect through a US or Canadian hub to Grand Cayman. Grand Cayman is the largest of the three Cayman Islands and home to the territory's capital, George Town.

How to pace it: Spend days one to six on Grand Cayman: day one, Seven Mile Beach; day two, boat to Stingray City; day three, George Town and Pedro St James; day four, botanic park and the blue iguanas; day five, snorkelling or diving; day six, east End drive.

Grand Cayman lies about 121 kilometres south-west of Little Cayman and 145 kilometres south-west of Cayman Brac. The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory. Seven Mile Beach, on the west coast, is a long stretch of sand lined with hotels. Stingray City, a series of shallow sandbars in the North Sound, is where visitors stand in the water as southern stingrays swim around them.

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, in the east, runs a programme to save the Grand Cayman blue iguana, which once came close to extinction. Pedro St James, a restored stone house of 1780, is described as the birthplace of democracy in the Cayman Islands. The islands are known for wall diving, where coral reefs drop steeply into deep water close to shore.

The Cayman Turtle Centre breeds green sea turtles. George Town is one of the world's largest offshore financial centres. Hell, a village in West Bay, is named after its black limestone formations, and has a post office that sends postcards from Hell.

Rum Point, on the north coast, faces the calm waters of the North Sound. The Cayman Islands were sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1503, who named them Las Tortugas after the many sea turtles. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, the sister islands, are reached by short flights.

Batabano, the islands' carnival, is held in May.

Practical notes: December to April is the drier season, and hurricanes are a risk from June to November. The Cayman Islands dollar is the local currency, and US dollars are widely accepted. The Mastic Trail crosses old-growth dry forest in the centre of the island. Cars drive on the left.

Safety: Canada's advice for Cayman Islands is to take normal security precautions (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates Cayman Islands Level 1 (21 May 2026).
