Vancouver to Hokkaido: Sapporo, Niseko and Otaru for powder and onsen
Vancouver → Sapporo → Niseko → Otaru
Powder snow & onsen Best season (general guide): Dec–Mar
Hokkaido, Japan's northern island, gets some of the most reliable powder snow in the world, and this route pairs skiing at Niseko with two very different towns. From Vancouver you'll fly to Tokyo and connect to New Chitose airport for Sapporo, then travel by bus or train to the slopes.
Sapporo is a good first stop to adjust to the time difference, with its lively Susukino district, the Nijō market and Odori Park. In early February, the Sapporo Snow Festival fills the park with ice and snow sculptures. Niseko's linked resorts, Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri, spread around Mount Annupuri across from the cone of Mount Yōtei, and evenings are for onsen baths. On the way back, Otaru's canal is lit by lamps in the evening, and the town's sushi restaurants serve seafood from the local waters.
Niseko's lift season usually runs from late November to early May. January and February usually have the deepest powder, and March offers longer days with fewer crowds.
Book accommodation in Niseko early for the peak weeks. Follow resort rules on off-piste and backcountry gates, and check the avalanche information before heading out.
How to pace it: arrive in Sapporo and spend two nights there to adjust to the time difference before going to the mountains. The transfer to Niseko by bus or train takes a few hours, and you should allow plenty of days on the slopes, as the best snow can come on any day. Finish in Otaru, just a short train ride from Sapporo and the airport, and spend an evening by the canal. Check the airport transfer times before your last day, because snow can slow the roads.
