Norwegian fjords Best season (general guide): Late May–mid-Sep

Western Norway's fjords are best seen slowly, by train, boat and road, and this route links four of the classic places in a line from Bergen to Ålesund. From Warsaw there are direct flights to Bergen. You fly home from Ålesund's airport, so there's no need to double back. The itinerary spends two nights in Bergen, one night in Flåm, two nights in Geiranger and two nights in Ålesund.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Bergen: day one, Bryggen; day two, Fløyen funicular and fish market. Then spend day three in Flåm: train via Myrdal, then Nærøyfjord boat. Then spend days four and five in Geiranger: day four, drive and ferry to Geiranger; day five, fjord boat and viewpoints. Then spend days six and seven in Ålesund: day six, travel to Ålesund; day seven, Aksla viewpoint and the Art Nouveau centre.

Bergen is a colourful start: the old Hanseatic wharf at Bryggen, the fish market and the funicular to Mount Fløyen. The journey to Flåm is often done by the Bergen line train and the steep Flåm Railway, or by road, and from Flåm boats sail through the narrow Nærøyfjord. Further north, Geiranger sits at the end of a deep, winding fjord, with waterfalls pouring down its sides and viewpoints such as Ørnesvingen and Dalsnibba above the village. The last leg crosses mountain roads and ferries to Ålesund, where a long flight of steps climbs from the town park to the Aksla viewpoint.

Car ferries are part of many fjord routes. Most take payment on board or automatically, but check timetables, as sailings are less frequent outside summer. Check current boat services, as some fjord ferry routes have changed.

Practical notes: Late May to mid-September is the main season, when mountain roads are open, boats run more often and the waterfalls are full from snowmelt early in the summer. Some high roads, including Trollstigen and the Dalsnibba road, only open in late spring and can close in bad weather.
