Amazon & Bahia Best season (general guide): Jun–Nov (lower water)

This route pairs two very different faces of Brazil: the Amazon rainforest around Manaus and the Afro-Brazilian culture of Salvador on the Atlantic coast. From Warsaw you'll connect, usually in Lisbon or another European hub, to reach Manaus via São Paulo or Brasília, and a domestic flight then takes you to Salvador.

Manaus grew rich during the rubber boom, and the Teatro Amazonas opera house is the best reminder of that time. Just outside the city, the dark waters of the Rio Negro and the sandy Solimões flow side by side without mixing, a sight known as the Meeting of the Waters. Most visitors spend a few nights at a jungle lodge up river, with guided canoe trips, forest walks, and night outings to look for caimans. Salvador's Pelourinho district, listed by UNESCO, is full of baroque churches and colourful houses, and you can see capoeira, hear drumming groups and try Bahian dishes like acarajé and moqueca.

The Amazon has a high-water season from about December to May, when canoes can enter the flooded forest, and a low-water period from about June to November, when beaches and trails appear. The Meeting of the Waters is visible all year but is often sharpest at lower water.

Check vaccination recommendations for the Amazon, including yellow fever, with a travel clinic. Book lodges that work with local guides and communities.

How to pace it: plan a night in Manaus before going to the lodge, as boat transfers usually leave in the morning. Three nights at the lodge are enough for the main activities. In Salvador, spend your days in the Pelourinho and the evenings listening to music in its squares, and keep a day for the beaches.
