Amalfi & ruins Best season (general guide): May–Sep

This route combines Naples, the ruins of Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast and Capri. It spends eight nights in Campania. From Warsaw you'll fly to Naples. Naples' historic centre is listed by UNESCO, and the National Archaeological Museum holds many finds from Pompeii. Neapolitan pizza-making is also listed by UNESCO as intangible heritage. Take the train to Pompeii, buried by Vesuvius in AD 79. Then head to the Amalfi Coast. Positano and Amalfi are on the coast, and Ravello is above them. The Path of the Gods is a cliff walk with sea views.

Take the ferry to Capri. A boat trip around the island visits its grottoes, and a chairlift goes up Monte Solaro. May to September is the best season, when ferries run regularly.

Pacing: Naples is busy and chaotic, so take care with your belongings in crowded areas. Book the Archaeological Museum and Pompeii ahead, and arrive at Pompeii early to beat the heat and the crowds. Bring water and a hat, as there is little shade.

On the Amalfi Coast, buses and ferries link the towns, but the roads are narrow and busy in summer. Ferries are often the quickest way to travel between towns. The Path of the Gods is best walked in the morning, before the heat. Ferries to Capri leave from Naples, Sorrento and the Amalfi towns. Capri is busy during the day, so stay overnight to enjoy it in the evening when the day-trippers leave.

Naples is the home of pizza, and the city's pizzerias are part of daily life. On the coast, lemons appear everywhere, from limoncello to desserts. Allow time to sit in a piazza in the evening.
