South and west of Hanoi, northern Vietnam's countryside offers limestone river landscapes and quiet mountain valleys. This route spends three nights in Ninh Bình and three in Mai Châu. From Warsaw you'll connect through a hub to Hanoi, then drive. It is known for its nature parks, river caves and historic sites.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Ninh Bình: day one, drive from Hanoi; day two, Tràng An boat trip; day three, Hoa Lư and Bái Đính. Then spend days four to six in Mai Châu: day four, road west to Mai Châu; day five, cycle the valley villages; day six, walk to a hill village.

The Tràng An Landscape Complex, where rowing boats carry visitors through caves under limestone towers, was added to the UNESCO list in 2014 for both its scenery and its archaeology. Hoa Lư was the capital of Vietnam in the tenth and early eleventh centuries, and temples to its kings stand in the valley. Bái Đính is the largest Buddhist temple complex in Vietnam.

At Tam Cốc, boats are rowed along a river through rice fields and caves, often by rowers using their feet. Phát Diệm Cathedral, built of stone and wood in the late nineteenth century, mixes Vietnamese and European styles. Cúc Phương was Vietnam's first national park, opened in 1962. Mai Châu is a former rural district, now part of Phú Thọ province, in the north-west of Vietnam.

Its valley is home to Tai communities, and some villages host visitors in homestays. Autumn and spring are the most comfortable seasons, and summer brings heat and heavy rain. Tràng An's caves have yielded evidence of human occupation going back more than 30,000 years. The Múa Caves viewpoint, reached by hundreds of steps, looks over the Tam Cốc valley.

Vân Long, a wetland reserve in the province, is home to the rare Delacour's langur. Ninh Bình is about two hours from Hanoi by road, and Mai Châu about three to four hours.
