Dolphins & rice terraces Best season (general guide): May–Oct (dolphins year-round)

Bali is about as far from the US capital as you can get, and that distance shapes this itinerary. After a long journey through Asia or the Middle East, the first night is spent near the airport in the south. The rest of the trip goes by car, so the next flight is the one home. The island is compact enough that the north coast and the central uplands are a few hours apart by road.

Lovina, the second stop, is a string of quiet villages along Bali's black-sand north shore. The draw is a dawn boat ride on a jukung, the outrigger canoe still used by local fishermen, to look for the spinner dolphins that feed offshore. Afterwards the day is your own: waterfalls inland, hot springs at Banjar, or simply a slower pace than the busy south. From there the road climbs over the mountains to Ubud, where four nights leave room for walks through the Tegallalang and Jatiluwih terraces, temple visits and craft villages, without having to rush.

Lovina's dolphins are seen all year. May to October is usually the calmest stretch for the boats, with clearer early mornings. US travellers often save the trip for a long summer break, which fits that window well. Choose an operator that keeps its distance rather than chasing pods, and expect an early start: boats usually leave around sunrise.

Indonesia offers a visa on arrival for many nationalities, and Bali has charged foreign tourists a one-time levy since 14 February 2024, so check the current rules before you travel. A driver hired by the day is the simplest way to travel between Lovina and Ubud.
