Temples & islands Best season (general guide): Nov–Mar

Thailand's classic circuit combines a capital, the cultural north and the islands of the Andaman Sea. This route flies between Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Krabi, with domestic flights keeping travel times short. From Washington, DC you'll connect via Asia, the Gulf or Europe.

In Bangkok, the Grand Palace and the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho are near each other on the river, and longtail boats and river ferries are a good way to get around. Chinatown's Yaowarat Road is famous for its food in the evening. Chiang Mai's old city has dozens of temples within its moat, and the drive up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep has views over the valley. Many visitors take a cooking class or visit an ethical elephant sanctuary. In Krabi, limestone peaks rise out of the sea. Railay, reached only by boat, is a centre for rock climbing, and island-hopping trips go to Phi Phi and the Hong islands.

November to March is the best time for this circuit. The Andaman coast is driest from about December to March, and the south-west monsoon brings rain from mid-May to mid-October.

Dress modestly in temples, covering shoulders and knees. Choose elephant sanctuaries that do not offer riding, and check national park fees for island trips.

How to pace it: give Bangkok three nights after the long flight. In Chiang Mai, visit Doi Suthep early before the crowds. In Krabi, plan island trips for calm days and keep one day spare for the beach, or for a longtail boat to Railay.
