Ancient capital & the River Kwai Best season (general guide): Nov–Feb

Central Thailand holds the ruins of an old royal capital and a river made famous by the Second World War. This route spends two nights in Ayutthaya and four in Kanchanaburi. From Washington, DC you'll connect through Asia or the Gulf to Bangkok.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Ayutthaya: day one, train to Ayutthaya; day two, temples by bike. Then spend days three to six in Kanchanaburi: day three, road to Kanchanaburi, then the bridge; day four, war cemetery and museum; day five, Hellfire Pass; day six, Erawan Falls.

Ayutthaya was the capital of a Siamese kingdom for centuries until it was destroyed in 1767. UNESCO lists the historic city, whose temples and stupas stand in a park.

At Wat Mahathat, a stone Buddha head is wrapped in the roots of a tree, one of the most photographed sights in Thailand.

Kanchanaburi is a town on the River Kwai. During the war, prisoners and forced labourers built the Burma Railway, and the bridge over the river is now a memorial. The war cemetery and museums tell their story.

Hellfire Pass, a cutting dug by hand through rock, has a memorial and walking trail. Erawan National Park, nearby, has a waterfall with many tiers and turquoise pools.

November to February is the cool, dry season.

Good to know: Bikes are a good way to explore Ayutthaya. In Kanchanaburi, a historic train still runs along part of the railway.

Ayutthaya's temples are spread out, so rent a bicycle or hire a tuk-tuk for half a day. Visit the main ruins early and late, when the light is soft and it's cooler. River restaurants serve grilled river prawns, a local speciality. In Kanchanaburi, give the war cemetery and museums quiet attention, as many visitors come to remember relatives. Erawan's lower pools are easy to reach, and the upper tiers take a longer walk. Bring swimwear and water shoes for the pools. Raft houses on the river offer a calm place to stay. Allow plenty of time for the road from Bangkok, which can be congested.

Safety: Kanchanaburi and Ayutthaya lie well away from the zones Canada says to avoid (within 50 km of the Cambodian border, and the deep south), within its countrywide high-caution rating (advisory updated 22 Sep 2026). The US level for Thailand is 1 (issued 7 Jul 2026).
