Confucian academies & a folk village Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Nov

Korea's south-east interior holds some of the country's best-preserved traditional villages. This route spends two nights in Daegu and four in Andong. From Zurich you'll fly to Seoul or Busan, then connect to Daegu. Daegu is a large city with lively streets. Seomun Market, one of the oldest markets in Korea, is busy day and night.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Daegu: day one, Seomun Market; day two, old alleys and modern history. Then spend days three to six in Andong: day three, bus to Andong; day four, Hahoe Village; day five, Dosan Seowon; day six, mask dance and jjimdak.

Andong is known as a centre of Confucian culture. Dosan Seowon, a Neo-Confucian academy, is listed by UNESCO among the seowon of Korea. Hahoe Folk Village, also listed by UNESCO, is a clan village of thatched and tiled houses inside a bend of the river. Its mask dance, Hahoe byeolsingut talnori, is performed for visitors.

Andong jjimdak, a braised chicken dish, is the town's best-known food. Spring and autumn are the best seasons. Summers are hot and humid.

Good to know: Buses link Daegu and Andong, and local buses reach Hahoe.

Daegu is a large city with a good metro, so it is easy to stay central and move around without a car. Buses link Daegu with Andong, and from Andong local buses run to Hahoe village. Stay overnight in a traditional hanok guesthouse in the village if you can, as the evenings are quiet after day visitors leave. Andong is known for its jjimdak, a braised chicken dish, served in a street of specialist restaurants. Korean apps work better than global map apps for public transport times.

Remove shoes before entering traditional houses. Daegu's markets and old alleys repay a slow day on foot, with herbal medicine shops and small cafés tucked between modern streets. Keep some cash for market stalls.
