Whale sharks, manta rays & Indian Ocean beaches Best season (general guide): May–Nov

Southern Mozambique has long, empty beaches and some of the best marine life on the Indian Ocean coast. This route spends two nights in the town of Inhambane and four in the beach village of Tofo. From Zurich you'll connect through Johannesburg or Maputo.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Inhambane: day one, the old town; day two, dhow trip on the bay. Then spend days three to six in Tofo: day three, road to Tofo beach; day four, ocean safari for whale sharks; day five, dive with manta rays; day six, beach day.

Inhambane is one of the oldest towns on the coast, with a quiet colonial centre, an old cathedral and a busy market. Dhows, traditional sailing boats, cross the bay.

Tofo, a short drive away, is a beach village known for its diving. Ocean safaris look for whale sharks, and divers come to see manta rays at the reefs nearby. In winter, humpback whales pass along the coast.

Research groups in the area study the whale sharks and mantas, and many dive centres follow codes of conduct when interacting with them. Choose an operator that keeps a respectful distance.

May to November is the dry season and the best time. Humpback whales are usually seen from June to October.

Tofo has a small market, beach bars and a relaxed atmosphere. Many visitors stay in simple guesthouses or beach lodges close to the dive centres. Seafood, including prawns and fish, is grilled fresh, and peri-peri sauce is the local flavour. The sand beach stretches for kilometres, with good walks at low tide.

Safety note: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Mozambique (crime, demonstrations, kidnappings, terrorism). It advises avoiding all travel to Cabo Delgado Province and to the Erati and Memba districts of Nampula, and avoiding non-essential travel to Pemba City and the Marrupa and Mecula districts of Niassa (updated 13 Jul 2026). The US rates Mozambique Level 2 and says do not travel to Cabo Delgado, the Niassa Special Reserve or Memba/Erati; it also advises avoiding road travel between sunset and sunrise (issued 21 Aug 2026). Inhambane and Tofo are in the far south, well away from these areas.

Bring a light jacket for evenings on the beach.
