Antarctic expedition Best season (general guide): Nov–Mar

Reaching Antarctica from Siberia is one of the longest journeys on the whole lark.tours list: a chain of flights from Irkutsk via Moscow or Asia, then Europe or the Gulf, and on to Buenos Aires and Ushuaia. That's why this page treats the flights as the part you plan and leaves the voyage itself to a specialist expedition operator. The itinerary spends two nights in Ushuaia.

Ushuaia sits between the Martial Mountains and the Beagle Channel at the bottom of Tierra del Fuego. With two nights there, you have time for a walk in Tierra del Fuego National Park or a boat trip on the channel, plus a buffer if a connection runs late. Most ships bound for the Antarctic Peninsula leave from this port. Crossing the Drake Passage usually takes about two days each way, and conditions can be rough. Once in sheltered waters, passengers go ashore by inflatable boats to see penguin colonies and glaciers, under rules set by the industry body IAATO for how close you can get and how many people can land at once.

The season is the austral summer. IAATO data shows that nearly all Peninsula voyages take place between October and April, with November to March the core of the season. Early sailings have more snow and ice, while later ones often see penguin chicks and more whales.

No partner connected to lark.tours sells expedition cruises, so this page has no booking button for the voyage. Book directly with an operator that is a member of IAATO, and buy insurance that covers medical evacuation from remote areas. Leave several days of slack between the flights and the departure date.
